Gold Coast stadium wins Queensland steel awards

the Skilled Park stadium at Robina, Gold Coast, has topped two of the three entry categories for the 2008 Steel Awards for Queensland.THE AUSTRALIAN Steel Institute says the Skilled Park stadium at Robina, Gold Coast, has topped two of the three entry categories for the 2008 Steel Awards for Queensland.

The awards, presented on 22 August 2008 at the Sofitel Brisbane, saw the 27,500-seat stadium winning the Architectural Steel Design section and the Structural Engineering Steel Design category.

The state winners of the awards will compete for the national honours, which will be announced on 15 September 2008.

The stadium’s superstructure consists of a steel framed bowl covered by a curved fabric cantilevered roof. The fabricated steel box section roof rafters give the venue a unique look.

According to the designers, the cantilever roof was designed to eliminate the need for obstructive supporting pillars or columns, while providing a sense of enclosure to retain sound and light while shielding from weather.
