Iron and steel industry commits to safety

THE Executive Committee and Board of the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) has again committed the industry to health and safety.
A board meeting in St Petersburg resulted in the release of a new industry-wide position paper on safety and health, as well as a guidance book on the institute’s safety and health principles.
According to the IISI, although the workplace safety record of the industry continues to improve, safety is about constant vigilance. The institute will encourage its members to work in small networks to identify industry best practices in health and safety areas.
The results of such small-scale studies will be made available to other members, allowing companies to benchmark and develop their internal procedures.
The institute reaffirmed six key points, including its belief that all injuries and work-related illnesses can and must be prevented, the responsibility that management has for safety and health, the criticality of employee engagement and training, and the integration of safety and health issues into business management processes.
