Metal analyser provides lab-quality results

The manufacturer says the device offers laboratory-quality analysis of aluminium and titanium alloys, as well as copper, nickel and steel.OXFORD Instruments has released a hand-held metal analyser which dispenses with the need for complex vacuum pump or helium tank attachments.
According to the company, its X-MET5100 X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser combines the company’s silicon drift detector (SDD) with a 45kV X-ray tube.
This is said to result in fast and accurate measurement. Light elements like magnesium and aluminium can be measured without the need for attachments.
The tool is suited for positive material identification, sorting scraps, and the aerospace fabricating industry. The manufacturer says the device offers laboratory-quality analysis of aluminium and titanium alloys, as well as copper, nickel and steel.
The unit can analyse and identify metal alloys in one second. Restricted elements such as lead can be measured at fast speeds. Trace element detection is accurate down to parts per million, but takes a few second longer.
