NSW environment department washes hands of scrap bombs

METAL recyclers are angry after the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) dropped its support for a working group set up to design an end-of-life solution for LPG gas bottles.
This move has surprised and incensed scrap metal recyclers represented by the Australian Council of Recyclers (ACOR). LPG bottles are hazards in scrap metal waste streams, because they explode when shredded.
The NSW DECC said the gas bottles are an occupational health and safety issue, not a resource recovery issue, and therefore not its responsibility.
The working group included LPG industry representatives, Sustainability Victoria, NSW DECC and metal recyclers. All members would have shared the costs towards a better gas bottle management system.
According to ACOR, gas bottles are the responsibility of DECC, because it constitutes hazardous waste.
