National campaign to stop copper thieves

MINES and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson says a national campaign is now underway to thwart copper thievery.

Ergon Energy is cooperating with Crime Stoppers to combat copper theft, which has been attributed to the rising price of copper.

The Minister warns copper theft is not only illegal, but also dangerous and disruptive. It can interrupt electricity supplies, telecommunications, electronic banking, and rail services. The thieves are also at risk of electric shock or electrocution.

The energy provider will work with police and other electrical utilities, telecommunications companies and scrap metal dealers to target the thieves.

Measures proposed include improved security and surveillance measures, as well as an awareness campaign to educate the community about the issue in order to gain their support and help.
