National steel award winners announced
The awards were presented during the ASI’s annual national convention in Perth from 14 to 16 September 2008.
The presentation concluded the entire program, in which
winners from
state-level awards vied for the national accolades. Three categories were presented, in Architectural Steel Design, Metal Product Building Design and Structural Engineering Design.
The Architectural Steel Design category was won by
Cox Architects and Planners for its work on the National Institute of Circus Arts in Victoria.
The Structural Engineering Steel Design category was taken out by
Arup for its work on the Allianz Centre in Sydney.
According to the awards organisers, the entries illustrate why Australian-fabricated steel is the preferred material when flexible and aesthetic design is required for robust structures.
