Nyrstar smelter could shut under ETS, union claims

The ETS would tax the company so greatly it would be unable to compete on an international scale.TASMANIA’S metal industry could be pillaged by the emissions trading scheme, according to the Australian Workers Union.
The union says Nyrstar could be forced to shut down its Hobart zinc smelter and transfer production offshore under the current model for the scheme.
The ETS would tax the company so greatly it would be unable to compete on an international scale.
Nyrstar’s Hobart smelter currently employs nearly 1500 people.
The union has warned the Rio Tinto and Temco smelters at Bell Bay would be similarly stressed under the ETS.
