Rare-earth enhanced welding
JFE STEEL has developed a technology for welding which adds a rare earth metal to the welding wire to reduce spatter by 90%.
The technology, termed “JFE Spray Transfer Arc Welding” or J-STAR Welding, uses an electrode negative polarity with a rare earth metal added wire in carbon dioxide gas shielded arc.
Spray transfer was formed when welding current exceeded 250A, causing conical arc plasma to be formed from the wire tip, and fine and continuous droplets to be transferred to molten pool.
When the welding current goes under 200A, the welder can control the waveform of the welding current, resulting in periodic short circuit transfer. This stabilises the droplet transfer and re-arcing, resulting in spatter generation less than 10% compared to convention carbon dioxide gas shielded arc welding.
