Choosing the right fluid for minimal lubrication

UNIST claims the best type of fluid which should be used with its Minimal Quantity Lubrication (MQL) systems are vegetable fluids.

The company’s MQL systems are used for machining aluminium, brass, hard steels and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals. They are most commonly used with milling and turning machines, as well as automatic CNC machines.

Lubricants are introduced into the process via external nozzles or through-the-tool coolant inducers or spindles.

According to the company, the system can use a variety of fluids including water-soluble, petroleum, vanishing fluids and synthetics. However, polarised vegetable fluid is recommended because the molecules will align themselves when contacting metal. This is said to reduce friction on a greater scale.

The company also says using vegetable fluid will result in dryer chips, eliminate dermatitis, reduce the amount of cleaning needed for parts, and increase tool life.
