Metal cutting tool holder becomes standard

A TOOL holder developed by Sandvik Coromant in the late 1980s will become a global ISO standard.

According to the company, its Coromant Capto tool holder was approved by the International Organisation for Standards in late 2007, and was entrenched as a standard in the second quarter of 2008.

The company claims the Coromant Capto is a stable and safe system for turning, milling and drilling, and is suitable for multi-task machines. It can also be used as a standard tool interface to standardise a variety of production machines.

By using the standard, only one type of holder is required, regardless of application or type of machine. Tools can be switched between different types of machines and processes.

Sandvik Coromant will no longer hold the patent for the tool holder as of 2008. The ISO certification will preserve the design, tolerances and shape of the tool holder.
