SUTTON Tools’ health and safety committee has been named a finalist in the WorkSafe Victoria Awards 2009.
Sutton Tools is one of five finalists in the category of Health and Safety Committee of the Year.
Sutton Tools is an Australian-owned manufacturer and distributor of cutting tools and accessories. The organisation has more than 240 employees at its Thomastown plant.
The company’s health and safety committee has 14 members, eight health and safety representatives and six management representatives who meet monthly.
According to WorkSafe Victoria, the Sutton Tools committee has existed for more than 20 years, and is highly consultative. It takes a continuous improvement approach to safety, with ongoing review and updates and policy implementation.
The committee has implemented a ‘5-S’ safety program, introduced tailored individual trolleys to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, and a new floor surface to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls in workshops.
The Health and Safety Committee of the Year section of the awards acknowledges a health and safety committee which has demonstrated a high level of commitment, represents all interests in the workplace and is highly consultative.
