Thixomat develops NanoMag magnesium injection moulding

THIXOMAT has developed the NanoMag technology for producing fine-grain high-strength magnesium sheets for automotive, aerospace and other applications.

According to Thixomat, the NanoMag process was developed in conjunction with the Department of Material Science & Engineering at the University of Michigan.

It involves injecting liquid magnesium alloys into an injection moulding machine. The plate is then rolled and heat treated.

The core advantage to NanoMag is the resulting magnesium alloys have nanometer microstructures which endow the magnesium sheet with steel-like properties and strength but at one quarter the weight.

Thixomat says the NanoMag process will see wide applications in the manufacture of fuel cells, electronics and medical parts, because the magnesium allow can safely dissolve in the body.
