Case study: aircraft parts maker upgrades machining line

The Flymill unit was incorporated into the aircraft parts manufacturer’s sheet metal machining and milling production line.ITALIAN aircraft component fabricator Alenia-Aermacchi has modernised its plant by purchasing a Breton five-axis machining centre for contouring and boring.

The Flymill unit was incorporated into the aircraft parts manufacturer’s sheet metal machining and milling production line.

According to the company, the new machine will allow it to keep up with changing requirements. There is an increasing need to be able to machine and engineer different materials, and newer components require double-curved surfaces and other processes that need precise machining.

The manufacturer fabricates parts ranging from small hatches to fuselages and wings. It chose the Flymill machine for its ample machining area and the flexibility afforded by its two workstations.

The Flymill is gantry-structured with a mobile cross beam. According to the supplier, it is compact, with high speeds and complex machining capabilities. Its linear-axis movements reach speeds of 60m per minute, while the direct-drive twist head has a maximum rotational speed of 100rpm.
