Siemens to supply steel processing line

The project is part of a production expansion, and the new line will process around 400,000 metric tons of austenitic and ferritic steel grades per year.SIEMENS Metals Technologies will supply special equipment, drives and automation systems to Pohang Iron and Steel (Posco)’s plant.
The equipment will be part of a cold-strip annealing, pickling and finishing line at the Pohang plant. The stainless steel strip processing line is due to start production in the middle of 2009.
Posco is a leading producer of steel in Korea, turning out around 30 million metric tons of crude steel per year. The project is part of a production expansion, and the new line will process around 400,000 metric tons of austenitic and ferritic steel grades per year.
The line will process cold strip with widths of between 600 and 1350mm and thicknesses of 0.3 to 3mm. The process speed will be up to 150m per minute.
Siemens will be designing and engineering the special equipment, including a skin-pass mill, a tension leveller, and side trim shears. It will also supply 270 speed-controlled AC drives, automation, as well as the operator control and visualization system. The company will supervise installation and commissioning.
