Steel properties bridges the divide

According to the engineering firm, DuraGal is easy to work with, because it is punched rather than drilled, saving time on the job.ONESTEEL Market Mills says its DuraGal 180 channel steel has been used to construct a bridge across the Tarwin river in Victoria.

The 240m trestle bridge will reconnect the section of the Great Southern Rail Trail between Leongatha and Foster, allowing pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders to cross the river.

The bridge, being built by Hulls Engineering Australia, is made of 19 separate bridge sections. The DuraGal 180 steel will be used in the bridge’s floor to bolt the joists to the timber.

According to the engineering firm, DuraGal is easy to work with, because it is punched rather than drilled, saving time on the job.

The steel has also been lauded for its lightweight structure and spanning ability. 1000m of the material will be used, weighing in at around 21t, or 25% of the entire structural weight.

The Great Southern Rail Trail project is due to be completed by the end of August 2008.
