US Navy turns to electron beam welding

THE
UNITED States Navy will replace traditional welding with electron beam welding to cut manufacturing costs for its Virginia Class submarines.
According to the
Naval Metalworking Centre, electron beam welding will also improve the weld quality. The technology will be used to fabricate the first reduction gears on the submarine.
Current welding processes require multiple passes in complex sequencing, and some joints require double-sided welding to ensure full penetration.
The electron beam welding will reduce costs by requiring only single-pass, full-penetration welds. Welds will be narrower and rim-to-shaft distortions will be reduced to improve fit-up and simplify machining operations.
