THE AUSTRALIAN Steel Institute (ASI) has opened entries for Australia’s first dedicated sustainable steel awards program.

The ASI says the sustainable steel awards will recognise and encourage exemplary applications of Australian steel as a sustainable material. Winners will be announced at the Australian Steel Convention in Sydney during September 2009.

The sustainable steel awards includes two categories. Sustainable Work Practices in the Steel Industry (Reducing Steel’s Footprint) will showcase energy reductions, water minimisation, capture and use, waste minimisation and recycling.

The Developing Sustainable Products and Solutions (Turning Sustainability into Reality) category will focus on demountability and reuse, adaptability, recyclability, material minimisation, site waste minimization, design for longer life and ease of retrofit.

Entries close 5pm 24 August 2009.
