AWU plans to increase Steel Plan pressure on government

THE AUSTRALIAN Workers’ Union says it is planning to increase pressure on the Federal Government to adopt its Steel Plan.

The Australian Workers’ Union launched the Steel Plan in April 2009, pushing a protectionist policy toward steel procurement for infrastructure and projects.

The Union claims multiple projects continue to use cheap Chinese products rather than Australian steel, and it is pushing to prioritise the issue in the 30 July 2009 ALP national conference.

According to the unions, while they welcome news that BlueScope plans to restart the No. 5 blast furnace at Port Kembla, there is still a long road to recovery for the steel industry.
