BOC’s new helium plant to supply all of Australia’s needs

BOC opened Australia’s first helium plant on 3 March 2010, in Darwin.

According to BOC, the helium plant in Darwin will make Australia self-sufficient for that particular gas.

Helium is used for extreme cooling purposes, laser welding, leak detection, and as an inert shielding gas in the arc welding process.

The new BOC helium plant is next to the Darwin LNG site that supplies the raw helium gas from a previously unused vent stream. It will produce 150 million cubic feet of helium annually, enough to supply all of Australia’s needs with additional capacity available for export to other world markets.
