STATE governments and the industry have doubled the funding allocated to the Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute (AMTIL) to increase the pool of skilled metal manufacturing workers.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work project has been running since 2006 and offers participants training in metals engineering. Potential employment opportunities upon completion include CNC operation, maintenance and trades assistance.

The extra $100,000 is expected to allow 44 more places in the program, which has already helped sixty jobseekers. There are training facilities in Toowoomba, the Gold Coast and Mount Gravatt.

According to AMTIL, even though unemployment is low, the manufacturing and heavy industries are suffering from skills shortage. The program is said to be a way to equip people with the skills needed by the industrial sector.
