Quickstep revs up aerospace manufacturing facility with large milling machine

QUICKSTEP Holdings says it has installed the most precise five-axis milling machine in Australia, as well as three autoclaves at its North Coogee headquarters in Western Australia.

Quickstep’s manufacturing facility will be ready for full-scale aerospace manufacturing by early March 2009. When completed, it will be one of the most advanced aerospace manufacturing sites in the Southern Hemisphere, and the second largest in Australia.

The Breton five-axis NC milling machine is capable of milling very large aerospace parts. It is part of the $10m production preparation plan. The company has also installed two 8 by 3m and one 5 by 2.5m autoclaves, for curing composite materials, and imported a team of aerospace engineers.

Quickstep will be using its patented process which uses heated fluids to provide a fast and cheaper alternative for manufacturing certain types of composite components.

The company is already targeting manufacturing contracts, and has gained accreditation as an approved tenderer from two aerospace OEMs.
