ROMHELD Automation is distributing a tool-changeable marking head, a ‘smart’ alternative to conventional engraving that can be fitted to existing machines.
The GRAVOSTAR is a high speed etching tool that uses an oscillating etching needle principle. It does not remove material, because the process engages in fine point compression.
The tool is powered by the CNC machine’s coolant or air supply, which allows the etching needle to oscillate vertically at a frequency of around 300 cycles per second. This produces marking points that are so closely lined up they cannot be individually recognised.
The tool can mark at speeds of up to 5m per minute, and can be fitted into a standard toolholder for ATC operation in machining centres. It has integrated height compensation of up to 5mm to accommodating writing on round or uneven surfaces. It can etch on most materials, including aluminium, coloured metals, tool and high grade steels, and various alloys.
According to the company, the GRAVOSTAR allows machining and marking operations to be completed in one setup, eliminating extra processes to reduce costs, time and handling. The CNC control allows for real-time individual marking of logos, serial numbers, part codes and bar codes.
